Recently, the Gansu Provincial Department of Science and Technology announced the list of the eighth batch of provincial science and technology plan projects in 2022, and officially approved the Lanshi Research Institute to undertake the "Gansu Provincial Technology Innovation Guidance Plan-Special Project for the Construction of R&D Institutions of Enterprises above the Designated Size" to build a new hydrogen (ammonia) energy storage technology R&D center.
As the contradiction between the large-scale development and consumption of new energy sources such as photovoltaic/wind power becomes prominent, energy storage is an important way to solve the local consumption of electricity. In recent years, Lanshi Research Institute has focused on the implementation of the national "dual carbon" goals, Gansu Province's "four strong" actions and major projects, closely followed the industry development and market demand, expanded the new energy storage market such as hydrogen energy, solar thermal, high-temperature molten salt thermal energy storage, and nuclear power, achieved new results in scientific and technological research and development, and implemented major projects, leading the high-quality development of enterprises with scientific and technological innovation. The New Hydrogen (Ammonia) Energy Storage Technology R&D Center will rely on the talents, technologies and resource advantages accumulated by Lanshi Research Institute in the fields of high-power water electrolysis hydrogen production technology and equipment, high-temperature molten salt thermal energy storage technology and equipment, renewable energy and energy storage technology and equipment, and other industrial directions. Focusing on the overall development requirements of our province to "deepen the energy revolution and accelerate the construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient modern energy system", the center will focus on the national key direction of the "14th Five-Year Plan": hydrogen (ammonia) energy storage technology route, tackle the core technologies and key equipment of this route, seize the development opportunities of the hydrogen (ammonia) energy storage industry, and promote the development of the new energy storage industry in our province.
The New Hydrogen (Ammonia) Energy Storage Technology R&D Center will focus on exploring the zero-carbon cycle route of "renewable energy-hydrogen production by water electrolysis-synthetic ammonia-ammonia hydrogen storage-hydrogen energy" and carry out the research and development of the following new technologies. The first is mild ammonia decomposition technology and equipment. In view of the high energy consumption of traditional ammonia decomposition hydrogen production technology, new low-temperature and low-energy ammonia decomposition reaction technology is studied, and an industrialized high-efficiency ammonia decomposition reaction device is developed, which can be applied to hydrogen refueling stations, distributed energy storage, backup power supplies and other scenarios. The second is the off-grid hydrogen-electricity coupled energy storage system. The long-term energy storage characteristics of hydrogen (≥4 hours) are used to achieve the stable consumption of renewable energy electricity, and the fluctuating renewable energy is converted into the power supply conditions required for hydrogen storage. The system architecture and control strategy for maintaining the stable operation of the hydrogen production system in the on-grid/off-grid power generation mode are focused on.
Roadmap for new hydrogen (ammonia) energy storage technologies
The construction of a new hydrogen (ammonia) energy storage technology research and development center will greatly enhance the competitiveness of Lanshi Group in the field of new energy storage technology, strengthen the innovation subject capacity of the enterprise, radiate the scientific and technological innovation and achievement transformation of other enterprises in the province, and play a demonstration and leading role in the development of the new energy storage technology industry chain of enterprises in our province. In the future, Lanshi Research Institute will rely on the platform advantages of the R&D center to carry out extensive cooperation with well-known domestic and foreign universities and research institutions, actively explore new development paths for "nuclear hydrogen optical storage and new materials", promote the construction of a hydrogen-ammonia energy storage industry technology source, advanced manufacturing clusters and multi-scenario application demonstration bases in the northwest region, play an active role in the innovative development of the national hydrogen energy industry, and provide Lanshi solutions and make Lanshi contributions to the national carbon neutrality and carbon peak strategies.
