SES, a US-based lithium metal battery developer, revealed on February 10 that it plans to build a battery plant in South Korea to expand its business in Asia.
SES, which unveiled the "world's largest" single 107Ah lithium battery, called "Apollo" , last November, said it had established its South Korean subsidiary but gave no details on costs, timelines or project capacity.
SES Korea will be the company's second major operational plant outside the United States, after the SES Gigafactory in Shanghai, China, which is scheduled to be completed in 2023.
“It’s all about speeding up and winning the competition,” said Qizhao Hu, the company’s founder and CEO. “The momentum is building as more automotive OEMs want to co-develop A-sample batteries with SES.”
South Korea is home to several of SES's major partners, including Hyundai Motor Co., SK and LG Corp.
SES, formerly SolidEnergy Systems, signed a separator material supply agreement with Entek of the United States in December 2021 to support the development and production of high-performance electric vehicle batteries.
Earlier this year, SES confirmed it had signed a joint R&D agreement with Honda to commercialise next-generation electric vehicle batteries.
