On June 24, 2021, the 9th China International Automotive Powertrain Summit opened in Shanghai. The summit focused on topics such as the latest technologies and industry development trends of powertrain electrification, aiming to point the way for the transformation and technological innovation of the automotive industry. As a new and powerful player in the HEV track, Honeycomb Energy was invited to send its overseas key account director Li Jiajia to attend the conference and deliver a speech, introducing the company's research and judgment on the HEV battery market and technology, as well as the development progress and product layout in HEV battery technology to the guests and the industry.

HEV models are favored by OEMs and consumers with both policy and market recognition

Using green energy and building a zero-carbon society has become a common mission for all mankind. Using green and energy-saving power for mobile transportation has gradually become a consensus of the whole society. Against this background, countries and regions such as Europe, China, North America, Japan and South Korea have introduced automobile emission reduction regulations, prompting and promoting technological changes in the automobile industry.

Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) models can improve vehicle fuel consumption and drivability to the greatest extent. "With the new round of decline in new energy vehicle subsidy policies and the formal implementation of the dual-point policy, the favorable factors for the development of HEV models will quickly emerge," Li Jiajia said at the meeting.

He also analyzed that the national policy has a clear and powerful driving force for the HEV route, which will greatly guide and promote the development of HEV. This year, many independent car companies such as Great Wall, BYD, GAC, Changan, Geely, and SAIC-GM-Wuling have launched HEV-exclusive platforms and models, which shows this technological trend.

HEV battery product upgrades Honeycomb Energy to add "core" and "energy" to automakers

Prior to this, global HEV technology was mainly monopolized by Japan's "two automakers and one industry". Affected by this, the batteries of HEV models were basically dominated by the nickel-metal hydride batteries used by Toyota.

At present, the HEV market is facing new opportunities. Honeycomb Energy, which originated from an automobile company, has launched an HEV lithium battery solution based on its deep understanding of automobiles and in-depth insights into the HEV market, combined with its research and judgment on technological development trends and its own accumulation and innovation in lithium battery technology.

According to Li Jiajia, Honeycomb Energy has launched the HEV-5.2AH soft-pack battery cell, with a power density of 6500W/kg. In terms of cycle life, it can achieve 35,000 times @ RT 3C/3C 30-80%SOC.

In terms of safety, SVOLT HEV batteries have successfully passed a number of domestic and international safety standard tests, including needle puncture, 200% SOC overcharge, and 150°C hot box, ensuring battery safety that may be affected by thermal expansion, thermal failure, and other issues.

In terms of charging and discharging, the battery has a pulse discharge level of 80C at room temperature, super power output and 58C recharge capacity, and also has super energy recovery capability;

In terms of wide temperature resistance, at a low temperature of -35°C, the HEV battery still has a cold start capability of 180W, which can fully meet the performance requirements of the vehicle when running at low temperatures;

In terms of energy saving, experimental results show that when equipped with Honeycomb Energy's first-generation HEV battery cells, the fuel saving rate of the entire vehicle can reach more than 35%, meeting the automobile energy conservation and emission reduction targets of major regions and countries in the world.

In terms of cost control of HEV system, SVOLT not only adopts low heat dissipation design and air cooling to reduce the cost of the whole vehicle HEV system, but also adopts soft package module-free (CTP) design to reduce the use of parts and effectively reduce the cost of structural parts. "Based on the overall cost reduction concept design of process, module and system, the overall economic efficiency of HEV batteries has been greatly improved." Li Jiajia said.

Targeting the 100 billion market, Honeycomb Energy accelerates the layout of HEV production capacity

After the "Passenger Car Double Points Management Policy" and the "Energy-Saving and New Energy Vehicle 2.0 Technology Roadmap" were successively released and implemented, the requirements for the NEV sales ratio and the proportion of energy-saving vehicles on the OEM side have been greatly tightened compared with the previous versions. Among them, the 2.0 version of the technology roadmap plans that the proportion of HEV models in fuel vehicles will reach 50-60% in 2025, increase to 75-85% in 2030, and reach 100% in 2035, with a clear development direction for the hybrid route.

The International Energy Agency predicts that the global hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technology market share will increase from 17% in 2020 to 60% in 2040 in the next 20 years, of which hybrid models will account for half of the market share and become the main technology in the future passenger car market. According to estimates, by 2025, the HEV battery market size will exceed 100 billion.

Facing the blue ocean of the HEV battery market, Honeycomb Energy has quickly begun to make comprehensive arrangements. Li Jiajia revealed that this year Honeycomb Energy's first production line with an annual output of 40,000 sets of batteries will be put into mass production, and the HEV battery production capacity is expected to reach 400,000 sets in 2022, which can significantly improve the delivery capacity of HEV battery products and meet the battery needs of domestic and foreign customers for HEV models.
