The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Maldives Ministry of Environment have launched a program to roll out solar-diesel hybrids across 48 islands to reduce reliance on expensive and polluting diesel microgrids.

The project has currently overseen the deployment of approximately 7.5MW of solar PV generation facilities, 5.6MW of battery energy storage systems and 11.6MW of energy-efficient diesel generators.

These projects fall under the Preparing for Outer Islands Sustainable Energy Development (POISED) flagship project, which aims to transform existing diesel-based energy microgrids into hybrid renewable energy systems. It aims to complete microgrids on 160 inhabited islands by investing in a total of 21MW of solar power plants, battery energy storage systems, energy management systems and high-efficiency diesel generators, while beginning to focus on grid upgrades to enable further penetration of renewable energy in the future.
