Recently, the preliminary work of the 20MWh battery energy storage system project of State Power Investment Zhuhai Hengqin Thermal Power Co., Ltd. was officially launched. The project was undertaken by the Guangdong Power Grid Energy Technology Company of China Southern Power Grid as a consortium. It is the world's first project to use energy storage system to achieve black start of F-class gas turbine and the first gas turbine energy storage frequency regulation project in China. It is expected to be put into operation in mid-2019, which will build another line of defense to ensure power supply to Macau.

According to reports, the system self-recovery after a large-scale power outage is commonly known as a black start. After a large-scale power outage, black start measures are taken to restore the normal operation of the power grid as soon as possible. After the super typhoon "Hato" in 2017, Guangdong and Macao reached a consensus on improving the disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities of power supply projects - "strengthening the construction of local supporting power sources in Zhuhai, with isolated grid operation capabilities and black start functions."

Hengqin Thermal Power Company is an important power source for Australia. With the assistance of Guangdong Power Grid Energy Technology Company, it completed relevant functional transformation and testing in June 2018 and officially has the ability to operate in an isolated grid. On this basis, black start can be achieved, which can greatly improve the reliability of power supply to Australia.

"Traditional black starts are mostly achieved with diesel generators, but they are limited to small and medium-sized gas turbines of Class E and below. The disadvantage is that the starting speed is slow, and it takes about 30 seconds to reach full load. The energy storage system has a fast response speed and can reach full load in about two seconds." Luo Jia, a professor-level senior engineer at Guangdong Power Grid Energy Technology Company, introduced that the energy storage system can also assist the unit in grid frequency modulation, has high stability, can generate sustainable income, and is pollution-free and noise-free.

As a joint contractor, Guangdong Power Grid Energy Technology Company of China Southern Power Grid is responsible for the integration of the energy storage project system, network access testing, black start, etc. In recent years, Guangdong Power Grid Energy Technology Company has been actively committed to the research and development and industrial application of energy storage technology. In addition to using energy storage technology for grid frequency modulation, it also applies a series of products such as battery management systems, energy management systems, and energy storage converters to substations, distribution areas, and even information rooms, providing overall solutions for various business areas of the power market and promoting the transformation of China Southern Power Grid into an energy industry value chain integrator.
