German company Heliatek has once again set a new record for the conversion efficiency of organic thin-film solar cells: an independent German testing agency has confirmed that the efficiency of a 1.1 square centimeter low-temperature deposited tandem cell is 9.8%.

This is the third time in a row that Heliatek has broken the world record for organic photovoltaic cell efficiency, proving its leadership in organic solar cell technology. Previously, records of 6% and 8.3% were set.

Dr. Martin Pfeiffer, Heliatek's CTO and one of the company's founders, said: "Heliatek is the only company in the world that specializes in low-temperature deposition of small molecules, a technology that is already widely used in the organic LED market. Heliatek develops molecules that absorb light energy and convert it into electrical energy. This new record also proves that our research direction is correct. At present, the conversion efficiency of Heliatek's organic solar cells has reached the conversion level of traditional amorphous silicon cells."

Thiaud Le Seguillon, CEO of Heliatek, said: "We are very happy with this result, which shows our leadership in this technology. Our next conversion rate target is 15%, and the conversion rate can reach 10% next year. Our soft and thin cells also open up new applications, which are not possible with traditional photovoltaic technology. In 2012, our third round of investment plan is 50 million euros to expand production capacity. This will enable the production of high-performance cells for new fields, such as building-integrated glass and exterior walls. This technology is expected to bring revolutionary changes to the solar industry."

About Organic Solar Photovoltaics

Organic photovoltaic technology is the third generation of solar energy technology after traditional crystalline silicon and thin film technology. Organic photovoltaic technology has two branches: polymer-based macromolecules and oligomer-based small molecules. Heliatek is a small molecule technology with easier control of the production process, higher conversion efficiency and longer service life. It has the following main advantages:

First, because it is produced at low temperature, plastic film can be used as the substrate material, and the batteries produced are flexible, very thin and lightweight.

Second, the color, size and transparency of the solar cells can be freely selected.

Third, the efficiency of traditional solar cells decreases as the temperature rises, but this organic cell is not affected by temperature.

Fourth, this organic battery technology is truly green solar technology. The battery is made of organic matter, which is easy to obtain and does not involve toxic substances and heavy metals.
