British designer Phil Polly has recently proposed a green energy development plan - floating solar cells, a hemispherical device that can float on the sea surface and can collect wave energy and solar energy at the same time. It may become a new generation of green energy strategy and the physical model is expected to be released within 12 months.
The floating solar cells he designed can be connected together to form a large network structure. As the buoyant boats float and sink on the water, they collect the wave energy generated. At the same time, the water waves also act as mirrors, reflecting sunlight onto the floating solar cells, which is expected to increase the amount of solar energy collected by 20%.
Deploying solar cells on the water surface has great advantages over ground-based solar panels, as it avoids occupying land area and reduces construction and control costs. However, this new design needs to take into account the harsh marine environment. For example, building floating devices on the sea surface must first overcome corrosion by seawater. If a large storm or hurricane occurs in the sea area, it will cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in economic losses.
