Fujifilm announced the results of forming thin-film solar cells on an Al flexible substrate in collaboration with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. The conversion efficiency reached 17.6% and 12.5% ​​when the aperture area was 0.486cm2 and 72cm2, respectively.

Research reports so far show that the conversion efficiency of previous flexible CIGS solar cells is 13.2% on metal foil and 7.5% on resin film. However, there have always been problems such as the difficulty in ensuring electrical insulation of metal foil and the inability of resin film to withstand high-temperature processes.

Fujifilm achieved this result by forming an Al2O3 layer on Al foil using anodization, producing a base plate that combines the heat resistance of metal foil and the insulation properties of resin film. The Mo layer, CIGS layer, CdS layer and ZnO layer are stacked on the base plate in sequence. In addition, Na doping process is introduced to improve conversion efficiency. In addition to laser engraving, mechanical engraving is also used. In the future, it is planned to test larger submodules while improving conversion efficiency.
