Whether in terms of growth rate or application prospects, digital isolators are undoubtedly a dazzling presence, especially with the vigorous development of high-power application scenarios such as 5G communications, electric vehicles and their charging piles, industrial control, photovoltaic and wind power generation, digital isolators have gained unprecedented development opportunities. According to market research firm IHS Markit, the digital isolator market size will reach US$767 million by 2024.
Growing demand for isolation
As we all know, all electronic circuits involving AC-DC or medium-to-high voltage DC-DC power conversion require electrical isolation. Electrical isolation can protect personnel and equipment, isolate analog ground and power ground to improve the circuit's anti-interference ability, and complete isolation and level conversion at one time.
Specific to applications, including servers, communications, solar inverters, wind power transmission, uninterruptible power supplies, programmable logic controllers, outdoor high-current LED lighting-related control systems, industrial servo motors (including inverter drives), electric vehicles related to inverters, chargers and high-voltage DC conversion, etc., all involve the need for isolation. CMOS-based digital isolators, precisely because of their own advantages, help shape the development of industries such as power supply, green energy and automobiles. In response to this, MPS has launched a series of power ICs for medium and high power applications, aiming to provide the industry with efficient, simple and reliable options.
Capacitive isolation technology support
All power isolation products use MPS' proprietary capacitive isolation technology, which extends life and reduces radiation compared to traditional optocoupler and magnetic isolation solutions.
Yin Liang, business development manager of MPS DCDC product line, introduced that the traditional optocoupler isolation technology encapsulates the light-emitting element and the photosensitive element in the same housing, transmits the electrical signal through electrical, optical and electrical conversion, and has strong anti-interference ability. However, the disadvantages are that the product has a short service life, a large power supply current, a large size, a low data transmission rate (<10Mbps), is sensitive to external common-mode interference, and has a long transmission delay.
The CMOS-based digital isolation technology uses magnetic or capacitive coupling to transmit signals. Based on the development route of silicon wafers, it greatly extends the service life of the device, realizes low power supply current, small size, high data transmission rate (>100Mbps), resistance to external common mode interference, and low transmission delay. At the same time, Yin Liang also said that although both are digital isolation technologies, there are still some differences between magnetic isolation and capacitive isolation. Magnetic isolation technology is based on micro-transformers, which have EMI interference to the outside, so the immunity to magnetic noise is relatively low. High-voltage capacitive isolation technology is based on the transmission mechanism of coupling high-frequency signals to carrier signals and then transmitting them through the bonding medium, so its immunity to magnetic noise is higher.
Five categories and multiple parameter options to help achieve "carbon neutrality"
Based on the proprietary capacitive isolation technology, MPS has launched five categories of products, namely isolated gate drivers, transformer drivers, isolated power modules, digital isolation products, and isolated amplifiers. The parameters of these products have reached the current industry-leading performance. For example, the switching frequency of transformer drive products is as high as 10MHz, which is 10 times that of other competitors on the market. This greatly reduces the size of the transformer and the number of external components, thereby achieving the smallest solution size. Different products support different isolation requirements and safety specifications, such as UL1577, VDE V 0884-11, IEC62368-1, etc.
Isolated gate driver: MPS isolated gate driver integrates all functions such as signal isolation, driving, and level conversion, so that it can drive power switching devices in the best way. It has short propagation delay and low pulse width distortion characteristics, and can achieve high efficiency, high power density and robustness in applications. MP (Q) 18831/51/71 is the flagship product series of MPS isolated gate driver, which includes a variety of channel configurations and can achieve key indicators such as up to 5KV isolation withstand voltage, 100KV/us common mode anti-interference, 30V output power supply and as low as 50ns transmission delay.
For different devices, such as MOSFET, IGBT, SIC and GaN, the system has different requirements for switching frequency, rail voltage, power range, drive voltage and undervoltage lockout, which requires the isolated gate driver to cover a wider range of parameters. In this regard, MPS provides different configurations. Among them, the MPQ series is a car-grade product, and the MP18831 series is an isolated half-bridge gate driver with a pull-and-drain peak current capability of up to 4A. The MP18851 series is an isolated dual-channel gate driver solution with a pull-and-drain peak current capability of up to 0.5A or 4A. The MP18871 series is an isolated half-bridge gate driver solution with a pull-and-drain peak current capability of up to 0.5A or 4A. Yin Liang introduced that the above product series can fully cover the different topologies required by customers, which is convenient for customers to choose different types in different application scenarios. There are also a variety of packaging options, including SOIC-16 NB/WB, LGA-13, etc. Different packaging will have a certain impact on the isolation level, and engineers can choose based on their own required system design.
Digital Isolators: MPS offers a full range of 2-6 channel ultra-low power digital isolator products - MPQ276xx series, which can support 5kVRMS isolation voltage, greater than 100kV/µs common mode anti-interference capability and up to 150Mbps data transmission rate. These isolators are designed to meet a variety of signal transmission scenarios, including RS485, RS422, UART, SPI, etc.
The MPQ276xx series is paired with the isolated power module - MIDxxW0505A series. Among them, MID1W0505A is a semi-modulated, isolated DC/DC converter that supports an input voltage (VIN) of 4.5V to 5.5V and an output power (POUT) of up to 1W in the operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, and has excellent load and linear regulation. This series of products uses a small, thin standard package (SOICW-16, SOICW-8), which greatly reduces the device thickness to about 2mm compared to traditional glue-filled power modules. In addition, compared with traditional open-loop isolated power modules, MID1W0505A has a good magnetic field interference resistance.
In addition to the digital isolator MPQ276xx and the isolated power module MIDxxW0505A, MPS has also launched a product series that integrates the two - MPQ27800. Through the integration of unique packaging technology, this digital isolator with an isolated power module can greatly save PCB space and improve system design performance, without the need for an external separate transformer. This series of highly integrated optimized solution product portfolio is very suitable for industrial automation, battery management systems (BMS), electric vehicle charging stations, and any application that requires reliable signal and power isolation.
Transformer driver & isolated power module: MPQ18913-AEC is an LLC transformer driver for isolated bias power supply, which can adapt to input voltages from 5V to 30V, configurable frequency range is 500kHz-10MHz, and supports power up to 6W. The package used is QFN-10, with a size of only 2mmx2.5mm.
In addition, MPS has also developed a 24V to 24V isolated power module - MIDxW2424. When customers want to do a streamlined board-level design, they can choose this module product. The input voltage range is 24V +- 10%, the output power is 1W, 3W, 6W, and the efficiency is as high as 87%.
Integrated controller:
MPS MPF32010 is a PFC totem pole digital controller for AC/DC power conversion. The totem pole topology uses active switches to replace the diode rectifier in the dual boost topology, which can increase the overall efficiency. The MPF32010 also integrates the entire control loop and allows users to fine-tune the operation of the totem pole through a friendly graphical user interface, greatly simplifying the design of the totem pole.
Complete isolated power solution, pin-compatible with existing solutions on the market
Based on the integration of the above products, MPS has launched a complete power conversion solution for the 3KW power level, with an input voltage range of 85V to 265Vac and an output voltage of 48V, including Totem Pole PFC and LLC two-stage circuits. It uses MPS's latest products such as isolated gate driver MP188xx, PFC/LLC controller MPF320x0, integrated power digital isolator MPQ27800 and isolated current sensor MCS180x. The coordinated design of these devices enables the solution to achieve a power density of 2.14W/cm3 and an overall conversion efficiency of 96%. It is convenient for customers to understand some of the characteristics of MPS products from the system level, including performance, conversion test parameters, etc.
MPS 3kW power level isolated power supply overall solution
In addition, the MPS power isolation product series is also pin-compatible with existing solutions on the market, helping customers to quickly iterate or provide standardized, certified, and fast board testing. Engineers can choose products with different packages, different voltage ratings, different numbers of channels, different channel direction configurations, and different module power levels according to their application requirements to adapt to different application scenarios. Yin Liang introduced that the MPS power isolator products have successfully cooperated with major manufacturers in multiple application fields.
