Allegro Releases Three-Phase Gate Driver for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
New device keeps batteries and HVAC systems running quiet and cool
Manchester, New Hampshire, USA - Allegro MicroSystems (hereinafter referred to as Allegro), a global leader in sensing technology and power semiconductor solutions for motion control and energy-saving systems, announced the expansion of the QuietMotion™ product line and the launch of the new A89307 automotive-grade gate driver IC. Designed specifically for battery cooling fans and HVAC systems in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles, this IC delivers continuous sinusoidal drive current to the load using a field-oriented control (FOC) algorithm, resulting in ultra-low noise and vibration, helping automakers reduce vehicle noise, extend battery life, and provide longer driving range per charge, reducing vehicle carbon emissions.
“Through continued design optimization, electric and hybrid vehicles are becoming quieter than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, especially when stopped, and drivers are becoming increasingly sensitive to noise generated by components such as cooling fans,” said Steve Lutz, director of Allegro’s motor driver product line. “The A89307’s hardware-based algorithms make it easier for designers to reduce fan noise while improving cooling performance and increasing range per charge. This is good for both car users and the environment.”
Embedded Motion Control Accelerates Sustainable Product Development
The A89307 integrates a hardware-based algorithm that does not require external sensors or software development. Users only need to use a simple graphical user interface (GUI) to select parameters and load them into the IC's on-chip E2EPROM. The A89307 uses only five external components, which can help designers reduce material costs by reducing the bill of materials and building a very small motor PCB system. The fully integrated algorithm can even eliminate the need for a separate microprocessor.
The A89307's operating modes include open-loop PWM or fully programmable closed-loop speed control. In closed-loop mode, customers can program the PWM vs. speed relationship to match the PWM commands provided by an external ECU. The A89307 also includes a field weakening feature to improve performance at high speeds. Slow-speed operation and windmilling start-up are also some of the features included in the A89307's hardware-based digital algorithms.
Although designed for various electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle battery cooling fans, the A89307 can also be used in HVAC system blowers and liquid pumps in traction inverter cooling systems. The A89307's external gate drive makes the device flexible enough to drive a variety of motor powers up to 500W.
Pricing and Availability
The A89307 is available in a 28L wettable flank QFN package. For samples or other information such as product pricing, please contact Allegro's Shanghai branch or local office.
