According to the Economic Daily, in order to strengthen the competitiveness of panels and market leadership, Taiwan's panel manufacturers did not choose to enter the OLED market, but instead actively invested in the research and development of the next-generation display technology Micro LED. However, analysts pointed out that for now, Micro LED displays are still difficult to popularize.
Lin Zhengxian, an industry analyst at the Taiwan Optoelectronics Association, pointed out that the excessively high production cost of Micro LED will become a key factor hindering market penetration.
In terms of price, 1 square meter of Micro LED TV display panel costs US$50,000, which is 100 times higher than the panel price of 4K LCD TVs, which is currently the mainstream in the TV market, ranging from US$500 to US$1,500. Even compared with OLED TVs or LED TVs, its cost is very high. In addition, the target consumers of Micro LED TVs partially overlap with those of OLED and QLED TVs.
At the same time, market research firm IHS Markit pointed out that the material cost of Micro LED TV is at least $4,900, the material cost of 65-inch white OLED TV is $400, and the material cost of 65-inch QLED TV is $1,300. In this way, the material cost of Micro LED TV is 10 times and 4 times that of 65-inch white OLED TV and 65-inch QLED TV respectively.
It is worth mentioning that Samsung Electronics originally planned to popularize Micro LED TVs in 2021, but this year the time has been delayed to 2024.
It is reported that the 146-inch Micro LED TV released by Samsung last year cost 400 million won (about 345,000 US dollars) per unit including installation. Even if the size is reduced to 75 inches, it remains at 100 million won (about 86,000 US dollars). It can be said that the cost is very high.
