The new R&S SMB100B microwave signal generator from Rohde & Schwarz (hereinafter referred to as "R&S") is available in four frequency ranges, ranging from 8 kHz to 12.75 GHz, 20 GHz, 31.8 GHz or 40 GHz , bringing excellent output power, spectral purity, extremely low close-in phase noise and almost negligible broadband noise to analog microwave signal generation.

The newly launched R&S SMB100B analog microwave signal generator has excellent performance and is a market leader in the field of analog signal generation up to 40 GHz at the mid-range level. The R&S SMB100B is easy to operate and comprehensive in function, making it the first choice for all applications that require clean analog signals or high output power (8 kHz to 40 GHz). Typical applications include testing radar receivers, semiconductor components, upconverters, downconverters or amplifiers. High output power and low phase noise make it an ideal choice for simulating interference sources in blocking tests.

The R&S SMB100B microwave signal generator has extremely high signal purity, with extremely low single-sideband (SSB) phase noise, excellent non-harmonic suppression and low broadband noise for all carrier frequencies. For users who want better close-in phase noise and frequency stability as well as smaller temperature performance variations, in addition to the standard OXCO reference oscillator, a higher performance version for all frequency ranges is also available.

The instrument supports not only the traditional 10MHz reference frequency, but also user-selectable reference frequency signals from 1 MHz to 100 MHz and 1 GHz. The optional high output power option measures 25 dBm at 20 GHz and 19.5 dBm at 40 GHz, and the option can be activated via an activation code so it is user-installable at any time.

Considering the newly added coverage of the microwave frequency range, the R&S SMB100B microwave signal generator remains light (10.7 kg) and compact, taking up only two units in height in a 19-inch rack.

The level accuracy of the R&S SMB100B's direct output is very high. As the required signal frequency increases, the difficulty of obtaining the correct level at the device under test increases: The R&S SMB100B supports two additional functions for compensating path losses and signal changes caused by additional test fixtures, cables or amplifiers. These functions help to provide the required power level at the reference plane, that is, at the input of the device under test. The first of these functions is the user correction function (UCOR), which can be used to compensate when the test solution frequency response is known and stable.

However, there are still some unknown factors, especially when the test plan includes additional active devices such as amplifiers, whose frequency response can change with level or temperature. The second function provided by the R&SSMB100B is closed-loop power control, which compensates for all these changes by continuously measuring the input level of the DUT at the required reference plane with a suitable R&S NRP power sensor and feeding it back to the signal generator to adjust the output power accordingly.

The R&S SMB100B is user-friendly in every detail. Users can create their own custom menus to keep the most frequently used parameters at hand. While setting up and running measurements, users can use the SCPI macro recorder to automatically record and generate program code for initially manual measurement processes, and then use the code generator to output the instructions in languages such as MATLAB®. With the R&S Legacy Pro feature, the R&S SMB100B (and other R&S test equipment) can be used to directly emulate other instruments, such as the R&S SMB100A or industry equivalents, without changing existing code.
