Nowadays, the times are developing so fast. Although digital multimeters have been widely used, pointer multimeters still have their unique advantages and are still in use. For example, if you need to test pulse data or test in a very short time, a pointer multimeter is better. Its advantage is that its pointer swing can very intuitively reflect the property changes of the measured object.

(I) Selection of pointer multimeter

There are many types of multimeters on the market. What kind of multimeter should we choose? According to the measured items and accuracy requirements, as well as economic conditions, we should choose a multimeter with high sensitivity, small basic error, small tilt error of the meter head, many measured items, large measuring range, large dial, good quality conversion switch, and overload protection function.

(II) Precautions for using a multimeter:

Multimeters are used very frequently. Improper use or carelessness can cause measurement errors or accidents. You must master the standardized use of multimeters and develop a habit of using them. Pay attention to the following points when using them:

1. Read the instruction manual carefully before use to understand the performance of the multimeter and the functions of each component and how to read each scale.

2. Perform mechanical zero adjustment before use and adjust the mechanical zero adjustment knob so that the pointer points to zero.

3. Select the appropriate range before measuring so that the pointer points near the middle position during measurement to reduce errors.

4. When measuring, select the scale reading according to the measurement item and range.

5. After the measurement is completed, the conversion switch should be turned to the highest AC voltage position, or the OFF position, and the test leads should be pulled out to prevent the meter head from being accidentally damaged or the battery in the meter from being consumed during the next measurement.

(III) Standard use of multimeter

1. Method for measuring AC voltage:

(1) Estimate the size of the AC voltage and turn the switch to the corresponding AC voltage range.

(2) Connect the test leads in parallel across the circuit or component under test.

(3) Reading after the test leads are stable

Precautions:

1. During measurement, the conversion switch must not be turned to select the range to prevent contact burning.

2. Develop the habit of using one hand when measuring voltage.

3. For AC power with a frequency not within the range of 45-1000HZ, the measured data can only be used as a reference.

2. Method for measuring DC voltage:

(1) Estimate the DC voltage and turn the switch to the corresponding DC voltage range.

(2) Connect the red test lead to the positive voltage terminal of the circuit and the black test lead to the negative voltage terminal of the circuit.

(3) Read the multimeter after the pointer stabilizes.

Precautions:

① During measurement, the conversion switch must not be turned to select the range to prevent contact erosion and damage.

② When measuring DC voltage, pay attention to the polarity of the test leads. Reverse connection will bend the needles or burn the meter head.

③ Develop the habit of one-handed operation.

3. DC current measurement method:

1. Disconnect the circuit and connect the multimeter in series.

2. Estimate the current and select the appropriate range.

3. Select the scale reading.

Precautions:

①The test leads cannot be connected in reverse, as this may bend the needles or damage the meter head.

2. Do not turn the conversion switch or select the range during measurement to avoid damage to the instrument.
