Ultrasonic phased array technology obtains a flexible and controllable synthetic beam by controlling the phase of each array element in the ultrasonic array transducer. It has many advantages such as dynamic focusing, imaging detection, detection of complex-shaped objects, and improved detection sensitivity, resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. This paper tracks and investigates the new trends in the field of ultrasonic flaw detection at home and abroad in recent years, analyzes the method of applying ultrasonic phased array technology to wheel defect detection, and uses the two outstanding advantages of flexible beam control and focusing in ultrasonic phased array technology to simplify the steps, solve a series of problems such as real-time flaw detection of wheelsets and improve the accuracy of wheelset flaw detection. Based on a series of experiments such as standard test blocks, physical test blocks, wheel defect sample wheels, and on-site EMU online flaw detection, and referring to the relevant standard documents on wheel flaw detection of the Ministry of Railways, a complete set of solutions for online phased array ultrasonic flaw detection of wheels is completed. The phased array ultrasonic wheel defect positioning and flaw detection resolution are analyzed and discussed, and the use of variable aperture focusing and depth focusing is proposed to optimize wheel flaw detection, which not only improves the flaw detection quality, but also ensures a high detection efficiency.
