According to the Korea Economic Daily, Huawei has asked Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to maintain a stable supply of memory chips.

It is reported that Huawei has recently summoned senior executives of the Chinese subsidiaries of two South Korean chip manufacturers, Samsung and SK Hynix, and demanded a stable supply of memory chips.

It is reported that Huawei is one of the top five customers of Samsung and SK Hynix, spending about 10 trillion won (equivalent to 57.4 billion yuan) each year to purchase DRAM and NAND chips from Korean companies .

After the United States amended its direct product rules, global suppliers are under increasing pressure to supply Huawei.

The report said that although memory chip manufacturers are currently not subject to restrictions from the US government, Huawei is concerned that the Trump administration may expand its restrictions later .

As the two South Korean companies supply more than 70% of DRAM memory chips worldwide, any action including by the United States would threaten Huawei's survival. Huawei is rapidly building up its memory chip inventory in case of emergency, the report quoted an unnamed industry official as saying.

Earlier, Jiwei.com reported that people familiar with the matter revealed that Huawei had predicted that the United States would further restrict its chip business, and therefore had placed a large number of additional orders in advance with suppliers such as TSMC and SMIC.

The delivery time of these chips is approximately 2.5-4 months, depending on the process, and can be delivered before September 14, so the short-term impact of the control upgrade on the company and its suppliers is not obvious.

According to other sources, Huawei placed an order with TSMC last week for up to $700 million, mainly using 5nm and 7nm processes. The chip delivery will be completed before September 14, and then used to maintain product sales for a quarter. In this way, Huawei's safety period can last until the end of this year.
