129.5 billion yuan: The world's second largest flash memory chip manufacturer is going to be sold! Japan's only seedling is being snatched away
According to U.S. media reports, Western Digital is in early talks with Japanese semiconductor manufacturer Kioxia on a possible merger and acquisition, and the transaction size could be as high as US$20 billion (approximately RMB 129.5 billion).
The two sides will reach an agreement as early as mid-September, and Western Digital's current CEO David Goeckeler will be responsible for the management of the merged company.
Influenced by this news, Western Digital's stock price rose by 15% in the afternoon, with a market value of US$21.45 billion. In regular trading, Western Digital's stock price rose by US$4.74, or 7.8%, to close at US$65.5, with a market value of US$20.07 billion.
Kioxia was previously known as Toshiba Memory and was sold to a consortium led by U.S. private equity firm Bain Capital for $18 billion in 2018. Toshiba still holds about 40.6% of Kioxia's shares. Kioxia is currently the world's second largest flash memory chip manufacturer.
The report also mentioned that if Kioxia fails to reach a merger agreement with Toshiba, it may restart its IPO plan as early as September.
