STMicroelectronics has launched a Qi wireless charging package that includes a 50W transmitter and receiver to accelerate the development cycle of wireless chargers for high-power applications such as medical instruments, industrial equipment, home appliances and computer peripherals.
By adopting ST's new wireless charging solution, developers can bring the convenience and speed of wireless charging to applications that require higher output power and charging speed, including cordless vacuum cleaners, cordless power tools, mobile robots such as drones, medical drug delivery devices, portable ultrasound systems, stage lighting and mobile lighting, printers and scanners. Because cables, connectors and complex docking configurations are no longer required, the design of these products becomes simpler, cheaper and more reliable.
The STEVAL-WBC2TX50
transmitter board uses the STMicroelectronics SuperCharge (
STSC
) protocol with a maximum output power of up to 50W. STSC is STMicroelectronics' unique wireless charging protocol that charges faster than the standard wireless charging protocol used in smartphones and similar devices, allowing larger batteries to be charged faster. The board also supports Qi 1.3 5W Baseline Power Profile
(
BPP
)
and 15W Extended Power Profile
(
EPP
)
charging modes. STMicroelectronics'
STWBC2-HP
transmitter system-in-package is the main chip on the board, integrating the STM32G071 Arm®Cortex®-M0 microcontroller and a dedicated RF front-end. The front-end provides signal conditioning and frequency control functions, drives the high-resolution PWM signal generator on the transmitter side, uses a 4.1V to 24V DC power supply, and also includes MOSFET gate drivers and USB charging D+/D- interfaces. In addition, the STWBC2-HP system-in-package SiP can be paired with STMicroelectronics'
STSAFE-A110
security unit to provide Qi-compliant device authentication.

The STEVAL-WLC98RX
power receiver board can handle charging power up to 50W, safely and reliably supporting all STSC functions as well as BPP and EPP charging modes. Adaptive rectifier configuration (
ARC
) extends the charging distance by up to 50%, making it possible to use lower-cost coils and more flexible configurations. The receiver board also provides accurate voltage and current measurement functions for foreign object detection (
FOD
), thermal management and system protection. ST's
STWLC98
wireless charging receiver chip is the main chip on the board, including a Cortex-M3 core and a highly integrated, high-efficiency synchronous rectification power stage with an adjustable output voltage of up to 20V.

STMicroelectronics also provides STEVAL-WLC98RX dedicated software tools
STSW-WPSTUDIO
, STEVAL-WBC2TX50 dedicated software tools STSW-WBC2STUDIO, developers can use these tools to modify the configuration parameters, according to the specific application requirements to customize the working characteristics of the chip. STMicroelectronics also provides a comprehensive set of development design documents.
Both boards come with an EU Radio Equipment Directive (
RED
) Declaration of Conformity and are available from STMicroelectronics Electronics Stores and distributors.
