Maxim Press Release | Latest Advanced Battery Management System to Help Make Future Cars Safer and Smarter
The MAX17843 is based on Maxim's unique BMS technology and is the industry's only single-chip solution that meets ASIL D standards.
Electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid vehicles, and plug-in hybrid vehicles rely on a large lithium-ion battery pack to provide power, which is assembled with hundreds or even thousands of cells. According to industry experts, by 2025, 25% of cars sold will have electric engines. Automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers need intelligent battery management systems to support reliable communication, highly secure, and low-cost solutions.
Maxim is making tomorrow's cars safer and smarter with the MAX17843 battery management system (BMS). The MAX17843 meets the highest safety levels, meeting ISO26262 and ASIL D requirements (also applicable to ASIL C). The device's differential universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) uses capacitive isolation technology to reduce bill of materials (BOM) costs and failure in time (FIT). This allows designers to reduce the BOM cost of their isolation circuits by up to 90%. The UART is extremely flexible and supports reliable communication in noisy environments. The MAX17843 uses Maxim's unique daisy-chain architecture and successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to achieve fast, high-precision voltage measurements and provide excellent EMC performance. The device is suitable for a variety of automotive and EV powertrain applications.
-
Safety: Design and management processes are certified by ISO26262 and ASIL-D, as well as TUV; meet various BCI requirements; comprehensive diagnostic capabilities
-
Low system cost: Internal cell balancing and UART reduce BOM cost compared to competing solutions; currently the only IC that supports capacitor or transformer isolation
-
Reliable communication: Reliable distributed and centralized CMC architecture with UART; supports 100m daisy chain connection and high noise immunity; supports ESD and hot plugging, and meets system radiation index requirements
