Kinoma participated in the world's largest music and technology festival SXSW 2015, calling on makers to "Start Making"
Few conferences can match the positive energy of SXSW, and this year was no exception. Makers from all walks of life gathered in Austin, Texas, for a 24-hour opportunity to network, pitch their ideas, and share the latest and greatest in technology, media, science, and education.
Marvell’s Kinoma team had a huge booth at SXSW inviting all visitors to “Start Making.” Kinoma Create, a JavaScript-based IoT development kit, was front and center in our presentation. It got a lot of attention from the crowd!
Selling lots of Kinoma Create equipment is just the icing on the cake
Anyone who has used it knows that Kinoma Create is an ideal platform for developing cool projects, learning advanced connected electronics techniques, and prototyping IoT products. Students, makers, JavaScript programmers, and professional product designers have all recognized the potential opportunities that Kinoma Create brings to them.
The show was also a great opportunity to directly connect with the early adopters who backed our Indiegogo campaign (which launched at last year’s SXSW). They were excited about all the projects on display as well as the news about our open source KinomaJS application framework.
This year's Internet of Things is more than just a concept of "things"
We defined Kinoma Create as an IoT development kit from the beginning, including at last year’s SXSW. What impressed me most at this year’s show was that more and more people are realizing that IoT is not just a concept, but an excellent opportunity to make our world smarter and more efficient.
JavaScript has been a big part of our vision for the IoT from the beginning. As time goes by, it’s clear that more and more people are realizing its importance. We’re reaching a lot of JavaScript programmers who want to get involved in developing connected hardware and need a friendly platform to make the leap. We can’t wait to see what they do with Kinoma Create.
Rich demonstration
The Kinoma Create demo system was the focal point of our booth, showing various ways to program, build and manage connected devices. Various technologies such as NFC, CoAP protocol, Beacon, sensors and ZigBee were used to connect and control applications such as robots, security systems, home automation, games, etc.
Demand from the teaching field
Better than expected, Kinoma Create has captured the attention of educators, computer club organizers, and parents looking for new ways to help novices improve their programming and making skills with connected electronics. This year’s SXSW show further demonstrated that Kinoma Create has a place in the teaching field.
The convergence of hardware and IoT
SXSW is a lot like a campfire. The convergence of hardware and IoT was very noticeable at Tech Breakfast this year. We headed to the booth at the JW Marriott Hotel to check out the product demonstrations and networking event. Kinoma Create connected with entrepreneurs who filled the room. Peter was interviewed by Mashable's technology editor after his talk.
Technical experts come to guide
We were excited to introduce Kinoma Create to Megan Smith. Smith is the United States Chief Technology Officer and Assistant to the President. She has a lot of influence on Pennsylvania Avenue, as evidenced by Maker Faire being held on the White House lawn and President Obama attending the Hour of Code USA. She truly believes that Kinoma Create can get more people creating.
Bruce Sterling, author, speaker, futurist, design instructor and SXSW regular, also visited our booth and got to experience all the demos firsthand. Especially since he has been following the Kickstarter campaign since last year, this was a great opportunity for him to get a full understanding of Kinoma Create.
Continue to ferment on social media
While it may seem like everyone is at SXSW right now, that's not the case. So it's interesting to look at all the action on social media about the word "Kinoma" beyond the Austin show floor. Here are some of the thoughts from fans on Twitter:
I've had a lot of fun with @kinoma over the past few days. I got it from @sxsw but you can also get it from @sparkfun. IoT + JavaScript is so cool! — Noel Portugal (@noelportugal)
I used to play with LEGOs, and now I can build my own robots. #SXSW #kinoma https://t.co/7DoAjmWtxi — robertocastro(@robertocastro)
It's never been easier to experience hacking through physical/digital interfaces. Tools, sensors, controllers, apps, all included. #sxsw2015 @Kinoma @TPNRETAIL pic.twitter.com/ksZGfmAYYS — Ben Gauthier (@bengauts)
SXSW, South by Southwest (a music festival held in Austin, the capital of Texas, USA)
SXSW is the abbreviation of South By Southwest (South of Southwest, which is the geographical location of Texas). This is probably the world's largest music festival held every year in Texas, USA. Every year, tens of millions of musicians and bands from all over the world sign up to participate. SXSW is also a showcase for new technologies such as smart wearables, artificial intelligence robots, iBeacon and the Internet of Things.
