In the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) medical setting
Using FieldFox Handheld Analyzers
When tuning the MRI radio frequency coil, the technician needs to read the information displayed on the instrument display, however, the instrument must be away from the magnetic field of the MRI machine. This problem can be easily solved by increasing the font size of the instrument display and switching to BIG READOUT mode.
Therefore, when performing maintenance and adjustments, the properties of the RF coil can be iteratively changed to observe the shape of the S11 trace and the values of the Z, P, and Q factors.
MRI systems use radio frequency (RF) waves to construct soft tissue images. Therefore, it is important to prevent stray RF waves from entering the MRI room. RF shielding prevents external RF interference from adversely affecting MRI operations and digital imaging.
Sources of RF interference include:
-
FM radio
-
Two-way wireless communication system (from ambulance and wireless LAN signal)
-
Cellular tower
-
........
MRI machines have highly sensitive sensors that pick up short-lived RF signals. These sensors are greatly affected by external RF noise generated by various electronic applications. Although MRI manufacturers have different requirements, most require 100 dB of RF attenuation at the sensing frequency. RF surveys can be more easily performed with a portable instrument that can make accurate measurements both inside and outside shielded areas.
Shielding and conditions may change over time, so shielding effectiveness needs to be checked regularly. Failure to do so may result in instrument artifacts that may affect diagnostic value and require the facility to reschedule the film.

We will talk about how to use
Keysight FieldFox Handheld RF and Microwave Analyzer
To detect wireless signal coverage
To identify wireless interference signals in healthcare facilities
— Provides channel power measurements —
The channel scanner feature provides channel power measurements to verify signal coverage, identify potential interference issues, and optimize network performance. Each channel can be customized with different frequencies and bandwidths for multi-signal analysis. This feature is useful for engineers and technicians performing wireless signal network coverage testing and interference analysis.
— Transformed into a multi-channel scanner —
The FieldFox's channel scanner option turns it into a multi-channel scanner for conducting site surveys, detecting indoor and outdoor signals (such as paging systems ), or communicating with emergency medical services or ambulances.
— Intermodulation between two signals —
The channel scanner can also be used to detect intermodulation between two signals (intermodulation is when two signals mix to create new unwanted signals). This is often the case in dense RF environments, especially in healthcare facilities. The data logging feature allows users to log signal strength data for each GPS point in .csv or .kml format and process the data offline.
With the proliferation of wireless technology in commercial and wireless medical device applications, interference issues have become increasingly common and serious. For example, consumer products such as mobile phones, computers, or tablets may cause wireless interference to medical equipment in medical institutions (such as CT machines, MRI machines, and other physiological monitoring equipment).
FieldFox's Real-Time Spectrum Analysis (RTSA) software is an effective tool for capturing interference and monitoring signals. RTSA is equivalent to an FFT analyzer without dead time. The receiver is in the frequency span of interest to the user, limited by the real-time frequency bandwidth. There is no tuning or stepping in between .
The RTSA has ample signal buffers, an FFT engine, and a display engine that processes the data frames in the buffer and frees up memory space before subsequent frames enter the buffer. It can detect transient signals, dynamic signals, and RF pulses within its capture bandwidth. This optional high-speed gapless measurement capability can be added to Keysight FieldFox. It has become an essential tool for field and local technicians to independently detect, locate, and resolve interference issues.
