TI’s 2018 analog sales increased to $10.8 billion; Infineon Technologies rose to third place, and ST had the strongest annual growth. The top 10 suppliers together accounted for 60% of the total analog market.

According to IC Insight's 2018 ranking of leading semiconductor companies, the top 10 analog IC suppliers accounted for 60% of global analog IC sales, reaching $36.1 billion, while in 2017, this proportion was close to 61%, or about $33 billion. IC Insight's McClean Report, updated in April 2019, ranks the top 50 semiconductor suppliers and lists the leading companies in several major product categories, including DRAM, flash memory, microprocessors, microcontrollers, and analog ICs. Figure 1 shows IC Insight's list of the top 10 analog suppliers in 2018.

TI's analog sales were $10.8 billion, with a market share of 18%, maintaining its position as the world's leading analog supplier. TI's analog sales increased by $900 million in 2018, almost twice that of second-ranked ADI and more than 10 times that of tenth-ranked Renesas, one of two companies in the top ten that saw a decline in analog sales. TI's analog revenue in 2018 accounted for 78% of its $13.9 billion in IC sales and 72% of its total semiconductor revenue of $14.9 billion.

TI's main targets are industrial applications (36% of revenue in 2018), personal electronics (23% of revenue in 2018), and automotive applications (20% of its analog product revenue). TI said that these three areas are highly profitable and provide it with the best opportunities for future growth. It is worth noting that in 2018, industrial and automotive applications accounted for 56% of TI's total revenue, while only five years ago, this proportion was 42%.

Retaining the No. 2 spot in the analog IC rankings is Analog Devices, which grew its analog IC sales 7% to $5.5 billion in 2018. The revenue figures shown for ADI include sales from Linear Technology, which ADI acquired for $15.8 billion in cash and stock in the first quarter of 2017. No single customer accounted for more than 10% of ADI’s sales in 2018. Until recently, ADI’s largest customer was Apple, which accounted for 14% and 12% of total revenue in 2017 and 2016, respectively.

In 2018, all three of Europe’s largest IC suppliers were among the top 10 analog circuit suppliers. Together, the three companies accounted for 15% of the global analog IC market share. Infineon Technologies rose one spot to third place. Infineon’s analog sales grew 14% to $3.8 billion, capturing 6% of the market. Infineon continued to expand its presence in automotive (43% of sales in 2018) and power management (31% of sales in 2018) applications. Industrial power control (17%) and chip cards and security (9%) rounded out the other major end applications.

ST’s analog sales jumped 26% to $3.2 billion (5% market share), the highest among the top 10 analog suppliers. Most of ST’s analog IC sales are targeted at motion control (motor driver ICs and high-voltage driver ICs), automation (intelligent power switches), and energy management (power line communication ICs) applications.

NXP was the sixth-largest analog supplier in 2018, with sales up 10% to $2.6 billion (4% market share). NXP sells its analog devices into many system functions, but one of its key growth areas is automotive, where its analog chips are essential components in emerging LiDAR, vehicle networking, and 5G systems.

ON Semiconductor’s analog sales grew 11% to $2 billion, accounting for 3% of the market. The 11% increase follows a 35% increase in analog sales in 2017 and a 16% increase in 2016. ON Semiconductor has achieved three consecutive years of strong analog sales growth, partly due to the company’s acquisition of Fairchild Semiconductor in September 2016 and partly due to the company’s large sales of power management products in the automotive market, especially for active safety, powertrain, body electronics and lighting applications.

Microchip Technology's analog IC sales grew 22% in 2018. In May 2018, Microchip acquired Microsemi for $8.35 billion, boosting Microchip's analog business in computing and communications applications.
