According to Sigmaintell, global shipments of smartphone AMOLED panels reached nearly 200 million units in the first half of this year, accounting for about 21% of all smartphone panels. Samsung Display (SDC) still holds the top spot with an absolute advantage. Thanks to the strong push from China's four major mobile phone brands, Chinese panel manufacturers have grown significantly.
Qunzhi Consulting pointed out that AMOLED panels have excellent display performance and leading advantages in the fields of full-screen and special-shaped screens. They have gradually become the mainstream configuration of flagship mobile phones of various brands in the global whole-machine display market. Especially in the Chinese market, AMOLED panels are favored by more and more manufacturers. In the first half of the year, the four major mobile phone brands in China launched a number of flagship mobile phones with AMOLED panels, including Huawei P20 Pro, Xiaomi 8, OPPO Find X and Vivo Nex.
From the perspective of panel manufacturers, Samsung Display still has an absolute advantage in the smartphone AMOLED panel market. According to Qunzhi Consulting data, SDC shipped about 190 million smartphone AMOLED panels in the first half of the year, accounting for about 94.7% of the AMOLED panel market.
LGD ranked second in smartphone AMOLED panel shipments in the first half of the year with 3.9 million units shipped, but the gap with Samsung Display is large; LGD's Korean E5 production line went into mass production and shipments in the second half of last year, and has maintained relatively stable shipments thanks to the demand for Google and LG phones. In the second half of this year, with the mass production of the Korean E6 production line and the shipment of Apple's new 6.5-inch iPhone, smartphone AMOLED panel shipments are expected to grow rapidly.
Chinese panel manufacturer Visionox performed well, ranking third with 3.7 million units shipped and a market share of 1.9%, which is very close to LGD. The shipment volume of Visionox's Kunshan production line has grown rapidly since the beginning of this year. In addition, with the mass production and shipment of 6.01-inch full-screen panels in the second quarter, the shipment volume will continue to increase in the second half of the year.
The other two panel manufacturers, Hehui and Tianma, ranked 4th and 5th with shipments of 2.3 million and 500,000 pieces respectively. Both manufacturers have a steady style and continue to tap the potential of existing production lines. Hehui's 4.5-generation production line in Shanghai has a good utilization rate, and achieved shipments of 5.5-inch flexible AMOLED panels in early July. While ensuring stable shipments of the Shanghai production line, Tianma is also constantly improving its competitiveness by improving product specifications. The mass production of the 6th-generation production line in Wuhan in June will further boost shipments in the second half of the year.
Qunzhi Consulting pointed out that from the shipment rankings of AMOLED manufacturers, it can be seen that except for SDC which is far ahead, the competition in shipment quantity among other manufacturers is very fierce, especially the shipment growth rate of Chinese panel manufacturers is obvious; according to Qunzhi Consulting data, the shipments of Visionox, Hehui and Tianma in the first half of this year have increased significantly compared with the same period last year, with the shipments of the three companies increasing by 365%, 145% and 260% respectively.
