Apple’s big Glowtime event is almost here, where we’re expecting to get our first official look at the company’s iPhone 16 range. Rumors have been swirling for months, with the latest suggesting that Apple will adopt SoftBank-owned Arm’s latest V9 chip design in its next smartphone generation – the same architecture used in its upcoming M4 MacBook chip line – to support a range of AI features.

Apple plans to unveil the A18 chip at an event on Monday based on the latest design architecture from Arm, people familiar with the matter told the Financial Times. Arm’s architecture, which is used in nearly all smartphone chips, outlines how central processing units work at the most basic level.

Last September, Apple signed an agreement with Arm that will last until 2040 "and beyond," ensuring that it can use its core intellectual property, the Arm architecture, which is used in its iPhone and Mac chips, for the foreseeable future. The multi-year licensing agreement also brought a huge boost to Arm. Arm CEO Rene Haas previously said that the V9 chip architecture, originally launched in 2021, brought twice as much royalties as its previous generation V8, which can be used in Apple's A17 Pro chip designed for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.

Apple Intelligence takes another step forward

This is the latest move by Apple to bring generative AI capabilities to its smartphones under the Apple Intelligence brand. The full version of Apple Intelligence is not expected to be released until around 2025, but we already have a good idea of the feature thanks to several features rolling out in developer betas of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.

Similar to Microsoft Copilot in Windows, Apple Intelligence can automate tasks within the operating system and work across devices (as long as they run on an M-series chip or A17 or later on the iPhone). Some notable features include generating text or images, rewriting text to make it more attractive or clearer, removing any distracting objects from the background or identifying users in photos, and upgrading Siri to understand and respond to more natural language.

But running on-device AI models requires a lot of computing power, which means that if Apple wants to bring Apple Intelligence to something you can fit in your pocket like the iPhone, it needs top-notch, energy-efficient chip technology.

Apple's press conference is coming soon, let's wait and see.
