A few weeks ago we learned that Phison was entering the PCIe retimer and redriver market. The company is a big player in the SSD controller market, and we've reviewed a number of drives with its controllers. We didn't know the company also makes products like PCIe Gen5 retimers.
At the show, the company showed off an example of a PCIe redriver in the ASRock rack GENOAD8X-2T/BCM we reviewed. That's a very cool AMD EPYC Genoa motherboard. PCIe redrivers act more like signal amplifiers, helping to extend coverage and tend to cost less than full retimers.
While we didn't see a close-up of the retimer on the NVIDIA GTC 2024, we do have some close-up photos of the heavy drive. In our review of the motherboard, we highlighted the Phison PS7101 PCIe redriver highlighted on the motherboard.
The PS7101 is actually a low-end PCIe redriver that acts as a dual-channel redriver. The company actually has several different redrive and retimer options.
The retimer that caught our attention is the Phison PS7201. This is a PCIe Gen5 16 lane retimer that can also handle CXL 2.0.
The PS7202 is an 8-channel version, and 16-channel and 8-channel versions are common.
While this is a PCIe Gen5 part, we are starting to enter the PCIe Gen6 cycle as these systems will be ready for launch in a few quarters. In the short term, we'll still be using PCIe Gen5 on most systems, so there's still a market for this type of retimer. It will be interesting to see where Phison progresses.
The PCIe retimer market has been heating up over the past few years, and now chipmakers are scrambling to bring solutions to the market. Today, Astera Labs is the big name in retimers, and Broadcom is also trying to get into the market. Phison Electronics offers another option.
