A landmark recognition system based on image retrieval was designed and implemented. The system helps tourists or users better understand the content of the image by capturing the visual features of the landmark and provides the geographical location information of the image. First, the best match of the landmark in the database is searched based on the extracted SURF features, and then the location of the input landmark in the map is given based on the best match result. The hierarchical database structure and hierarchical retrieval method adopted by the system make the retrieval efficiency 30% higher than the traditional traversal retrieval method. A large number of experiments have proved that the algorithm proposed in this paper is robust and highly accurate. The system has been successfully tested and used in landmark recognition within universities.
