The Universal Serial Bus is gradually replacing the traditional RS-232 bus with its advantages of fast transmission speed, less resource occupation, and true plug-and-play. External devices that use the traditional RS-232 interface as a data communication channel can be connected to the host through a USB/RS-232 converter. This article describes in detail the working principle, internal structure, pin distribution and function of FTDI\'s USB/RS-232 bidirectional conversion chip FT8U232AM, and gives a typical design circuit and driver software for a USB/RS-232 converter using FT8U232AM, as well as a programming list for an off-chip EEPROM.
