Analysis of dropped calls in the GSM system 171 Composition of the GSM system 1.1 Composition of the GSM system The typical system composition of GSM is shown in the figure below. A GSM system can be composed of three subsystems, namely the operation support subsystem (OSS), the base station subsystem (BSS) and the network subsystem (NSS). Among them, the base station subsystem BSS is the basic component in the GSM system that is most directly related to the wireless cellular aspect. It is directly connected to the mobile station through a wireless interface and is responsible for wireless transmission and reception and the management of wireless resources. The network subsystem is the core of the entire system. It plays the functions of switching, connecting and managing communications between GSM mobile users and between mobile users and other communication network users. It is mainly responsible for completing call processing, communication management, mobility management, partial wireless resource management, security management, user data and equipment management, billing record processing, public channels, signaling processing and local operation and maintenance. The base station subsystem BSS is mainly responsible for the transmission and reception of wireless information and wireless resource management; at the same time, it is connected to the NSS...
