Comparison between CDMA and GSM [pic] Comparison between CDMA and GSM (reprinted) GSM requires 200 base stations to cover 1000km2, while CDMA only requires 45 base stations. Moreover, GSM uses 42 time slots per sector (95% of 44 time slots), which is impractical because it requires at least 8% of the time slots for control. Even so, CDMA has 80% fewer base stations than GSM, and each CDMA sector only counts 55% of the maximum capacity. The radius of the GSM cell decreases as the number of actual traffic channels increases. For 20 actual traffic channels per square kilometer, CDMA is only 50% of the maximum load, and each base station can support up to 20km2. On the other hand, GSM base stations with more than 14 voice time slots (limited by C/I ≥ 14dB) cannot provide acceptable voice quality, which limits service providers to a range of 6km. 3. Capacity ■ Spectrum is limited and expensive. An air interface that can effectively utilize spectrum can support many users within the same bandwidth, increase potential revenue from increasing the number of users, and reduce spectrum-related costs. The spectrum utilization rate of CDMA is greater than 10 times that of AMPS, and high capacity is the characteristic of CDMA. ■ In high-speed mobile state, CDMA can provide 25 calls/sectors/CDMA channels, which already includes 35% soft switching overhead. Each CDMA channel uses 1.25MHz to send and receive spectrum. In wireless local loop or low-speed mobile applications, soft switching is less, and if a high-gain antenna is used, more than 40 calls/sectors/CDMA channels can be supported. ■ The capacity of CDMA, GSM, and AMPS can be derived from the comparison of occupying 10MHz and 30MHz spectrum. If a conservative guard band is used, 10MHz spectrum can be allocated to 3 CDMA channels, and 30MHz can be allocated to 11 CDMA channels; GSM or AMPS has no guard band, which is the most optimistic situation for them, as shown in Table 3 and Table 4. Table 3: Occupancy of 10MHz spectrum (5MHz transmit, 5MHz receive) IV. Price ■ Many factors must be considered when determining the cost of implementing a wireless system. The initial cost includes the base station and base station controller, ...
