Options and Solutions for Splitting Isolated Power in Isolated RS-485 Nodes Isolating signal and power in RS-485 nodes presents design challenges to achieve the optimal configuration for system requirements such as small size, low power, data rate, EMI, and bill of materials cost. Traditional discrete solutions such as optocouplers have issues with failure life and the high power consumption per isolated channel due to the physical characteristics of the optocoupler technology itself, which have been well documented in the industry. In addition, the cost of optocoupler technology increases significantly with increasing data rates, and the manufacturing complexity increases with the number of components. The implementation of discrete isolated DC/DC converters requires the designer to have knowledge of transformer design and be able to match the other power components of the isolated DC/DC converter to the transformer. The design is susceptible to the parasitic resistance, inductance, and capacitance associated with these components. Fortunately, new highly integrated isolated transceiver solutions are now available to address these design challenges.
