The course materials for digital television and high-definition television include: 6.1 Overview of digital television 6.1.1 Concept of digital television Digital television refers to a system that converts analog television signals into digital television signals (more advanced television cameras should directly obtain digital television signals), and then transmits, processes or stores them, or restores them to images (can be restored to analog signals first). The storage medium for digital television signals can be various semiconductor storage circuits (RAM, ROM, E2PROM, etc.); it can also be a video laser disc (VCD, DVD) or HDD, the latter of which is a permanent storage medium. In order to reduce the amount of data, digital television signals are often compressed and encoded before transmission or storage. 5.1.2 Advantages of digital television (1) Digital television has strong anti-interference ability; (2) Digital television sets are stable and reliable, easy to adjust, and easy to produce; (3) Digital television signals are easy to interface with computers or other digital devices; (4) Digital television signals can be used to achieve signal processing functions that are difficult to obtain with analog signals. 6.2 Coding of TV Signals 6.2.1 Digitization of TV Signals The process of converting analog TV signals to digital TV signals is the analog/digital conversion encoding process (called PCM modulation pulse code modulation, implemented by A/D converter), and the process of converting digital TV signals to analog signals is called PCM demodulation process (implemented by D/A converter). We know that A/D conversion is the process of sampling and quantizing analog signals, converting continuous (amplitude and time) signals into discrete n-bit binary digital codes. Let the maximum number of discrete values be M, and the relationship between n and M is 2n -1 =M. The output of A/D conversion can be an n-bit parallel code or a serial code with a rate of n fS (sampling conversion frequency).
