This paper describes a new insulation system for air-cooled steam turbine generator stator winding coils. The power density of air-cooled generators can be increased by improving the thermal resistance of the stator coil insulation. The approach taken to achieve better thermal resistance is to reduce the thickness of the main insulation while improving the dielectric parameters of the coil. This paper describes a new air-cooled stator coil insulation design that improves three major aspects of the coil insulation. These are: the main insulation, the fill material at the Roebel transpositions, and the external corona suppression. The contribution of each improvement to the dielectric performance of the new coil design is commented on.
