This paper studies the addition of cooperative transmission and its energy efficiency in wireless sensor networks, and solves two key issues: \"when to cooperate\" and \"energy efficiency of cooperation\". Energy efficiency expressions for direct transmission and cooperative transmission are derived, and the impact of main parameters on cooperative transmission performance is discussed. Simulation results show that when the communication distance is greater than the \"threshold distance\", the energy efficiency of adding cooperative transmission is better than that of direct transmission; energy efficiency can be improved by optimizing the position of the selected relay node or the modulation order.
