Section 4, Article 8.4.1 of the Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings (GBJ16-87) (2001 edition) stipulates: \"Indoor fire water supply should be designed for unit-type residential buildings with more than seven floors, tower-type residential buildings with more than six floors, corridor-type residential buildings, and unit-type residential buildings with commercial outlets on the ground floor\". Based on this code, many designers have come to the conclusion that \"indoor fire water supply system is not required for all residential buildings with no more than six floors (including commercial outlets on the ground floor) and unit-type residential buildings with no more than seven floors\". In addition, Chapter 1, Article 1.02 of the Code for Design of Fire Extinguisher Configuration in Buildings (GBJ140-90) (1997 edition) stipulates: \"This code does not apply to ordinary residential buildings with nine floors or less\". As a result, most low-rise residential buildings (six floors or less) are completely unprotected, and the vast majority of urban residents in my country live in such unprotected six-story or less residential buildings. The author believes that with the development of social economy and the improvement of residents\' living standards, low-rise residential buildings should also be designed with fire protection systems.
