H.265 Overview (2009/06) 1. Current Status H.265 is the next generation coding standard planned by ITU-T VCEG. The original plan was to start defining the requirements and designing specific algorithms for H.265 from 2005 to 2008, and to officially launch it from 2008 to 2010. However, it is still in the exploratory stage: the goal has not yet been clarified, and the direction and plan are still being brainstormed. The launch of the standard will be delayed until around 2012. The official statement of the ITU is, \"The work on H.265 is currently in a conceptual/exploration phase. The fundamental issue is the technical challenge of achieving a substantial improvement relative to H.264. It is also possible that we could standardize further extensions/variations of H.264, which may impact the potential for an H.265. We may expect to potentially complete H.265 around 2012. However, the fundamental issue is that we must have a technical design that would merit the creation of such a standard. So it could hypothetically happen either sooner or later than that, depending on when suitable technology becomes available and sufficiently …
