Before the latest IEC61000-3-2 standard came into effect in 2005, most PC, monitor and TV power supplies generated excessive power line harmonics when powered by 110 to 120V, 60Hz single-phase AC. Driven by this newer and more stringent IEC standard, power supply manufacturers began to minimize power line harmonics by adding power factor correction (PFC).
