Abstract: White LEDs are widely used as backlights for LCDs in portable devices because they are less complex, less expensive, and smaller than CCFL backlights. As portable devices such as PDAs, cell phones, and digital cameras migrate to color LCD displays, more and more products require backlights. This article discusses charge pump and inductive boost converter schemes for powering series or parallel white LEDs, using either voltage-regulated or current-regulated controllers. The article also discusses the tradeoffs between size, efficiency, battery life, and LED matching.
