The Dallas Semiconductor 1-Wire bus is a simple signal exchange architecture that allows bidirectional communication between a host and peripheral devices over a single line. All 1-Wire buses have one common feature: each device, whether in a chip or an iButton, has a unique, factory-etched serial number that is unique to each device. This allows any device to be independently selected from the many devices connected to the same bus. When one, two, or even more 1-Wire devices can share a single line for communication, a binary bit search method can be used to find each device in turn. Once the serial number of a device is known, it can be uniquely selected for communication by addressing the serial number.
