The MAX16550 protection IC contains integrated low-resistance MOSFETs and lossless current-sensing circuitry with SMBus/PMBus™ control and reporting. The IC is designed to provide optimal solutions for power distribution, control, monitoring and protection of the system's 12V power supply. An internal LDO provides the bias supply voltage for the protection IC. If no fault is detected, the IC starts to start up and is designed to provide a controlled, monotonic start-up. Programmable soft-start ramp and delay are provided to limit inrush current during startup. The IC senses the current and voltage of the 12V system power rail and provides multi-level protection with rapid shutdown when a fault is detected. Maxim's patented lossless current detection detects current changes with load and temperature with high accuracy, improving the overall energy efficiency of the system and reducing power consumption. The output voltage is monitored at all times. If at any time the output voltage drops below the programmable output undervoltage lockout threshold, the PWRGD signal asserts low. If at any time the input voltage drops below the programmable input undervoltage lockout threshold, the PWRGD signal asserts low. The IC can be configured to provide input overvoltage protection via PMBus. Input overvoltage protection is disabled by default. When enabled via PMBus, if the input voltage exceeds the programmable overvoltage threshold, the MOSFET latches and issues a fault indication.
