The resistor-capacitor network R1-R2-C1 provides an operating reference voltage that is superimposed on top of the DC voltage. This retention voltage can be adjusted by the speed setting potential R2. The reference voltage appearing at R2 wiper is balanced by the motor residual counter flowing through the thyristor gate. Due to heavy load, the motor slows down, the counter drops, and the reference ramp triggers the thyristor early in the AC cycle.
