Micrellnc has launched the industry's largest and most powerful LED driver MIC 2298 for portable electronic devices . This device is a 7W high-efficiency step-up DC/DC converter packaged in a small 3mm×3mm MLF. The MLC2298 is designed for flash and flashlight lighting applications in mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and digital cameras.

The MIC2298 is guaranteed to deliver 3.5A of conversion current. The brightness of its white LEDs can be dynamically controlled by applying a voltage or pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal to the brightness setting pin. When this integrated circuit operates at a fixed conversion frequency of 1MHz, the efficiency is above 86%. This high efficiency results in longer battery life, coupled with its ultra-small size, making Micrel's MIC2298 the best solution for driving high-brightness white LEDs in advanced mobile phones and PDA devices.

The MIC2298 solution requires only a small 2.2μH inductor and small ceramic capacitors, minimizing the size and cost of the solution. Its working input voltage range is 2.5~10V. MLC2298 driving LED circuit is shown in the figure.
