Netizens share: Advice for young electronic engineers[Copy link]
Introduction: On January 6, on the Alibaba Electronics and Appliances Forum , netizen nemko published a post titled "Advice to Young Engineers" , which described his experience in the growth of young engineers and aroused heated discussions among netizens. Ten
pieces of advice for young engineers. Before starting his own business, Zhao Deli, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Xinwei Group, had been an electronic engineer for more than ten years. This is a reporter's interview with him: I am not very promising. Looking around, I don't see many promising people! Looking back on my engineering career, I am filled with emotion. I would like to say a few words from the bottom of my heart, which can also be regarded as a reminder to our juniors. I hope they are better than us!
[1] Plan your own path well, don't follow your feelings! According to personal ideal decision-making arrangements, most people do not expect to become academicians or professors, but hope to live a more comfortable and enjoyable life. Then, you need to carefully plan your own trajectory. Start with an industry and gradually gain a deeper understanding of it. Don't change jobs frequently, especially don't change jobs just for a little salary. In the long run, this little money is nothing. Once you have a few years of experience in an industry, money will not be a problem at all. Frequent changes are not the best strategy. In the end, you will not be able to fully understand any industry and will always be a novice!
[2] You can do technology, but don't indulge in technology. Don't focus on technology! It will put a lot of pressure on yourself. If you put all your mind on it, you are destined to become a person like Kong Yiji! Know when to stop, because technology is only one of the pillars of your future, and it is not the biggest pillar, unless you only want to be an engineer until you are old!
[3] Don't be a technical expert, just be an expert in comprehensive qualities! In the enterprise, we often look down on someone and say that he "knows nothing, why do you get so much money, why do you get promoted!" This is a common and typical pedantic statement of engineers. Is 8051 great? If someone can get promoted, he must have his own skills, and they must have skills that you don't have. Think about it, the boss has been in business for so many years, how could he not have as much experience as you, a rookie? He may be good at management, good at understanding the boss's intentions, good at department coordination, etc. Therefore, you must cultivate your own multi-faceted abilities, including management, affinity, ability to read people's expressions, ability to solve problems, etc. If you want to become a master of comprehensive qualities, you will have a bright future. Otherwise, you can only hide in the corner and watch the oscilloscope! Skills other than technology are more important! ! From ancient times to
the present, the United States and Japan have always been like this! [4] Make friends with people from all walks of life! Don't just associate with engineers, thinking that you have a common language. In fact, it is more important to associate with other types of people. If you hope to be a boss or a senior manager one day, then you will face these people all day long. Understand their experiences, thinking habits, hobbies, learn their way of dealing with problems, and understand the phenomena and problems in every corner of society. This is a huge asset for future development. Without these, you will be clumsy, stumble, encounter many difficulties, pay a lot of tuition fees, and greatly reduce the probability of success!
[5] Knowledge does not have to be specialized, but it must be broad! Read more books on other subjects, such as finance, accounting, import and export, taxation, law, etc., to accumulate some knowledge for the future. It will be more useful in the future! You will pay less tuition fees!!
[6] Seize the opportunity to change to technical management or marketing! If you want to have a future, you can't just do development all the time. When the time is right, you should change to management or sales. You will have a better future. Your previous technical work is not in vain. It will be useful in the future. Management can cultivate your leadership ability, and sales can cultivate your market concepts and thinking. At the same time, you can accumulate a huge network of people for your future development! It should be said that this is the real pillar of the future!!
[7] Gradually overcome your own psychological weaknesses and character flaws! Suspicion, sensitivity, naivety (derogatory, not cute), indecision, timidity, worrying, thin-skinned, not dark enough, dogmatic thinking... These common character weaknesses of engineers must be changed! Is it difficult? It is impossible to just think about it in bed. Go and help your friend to guard the street stall for a month. It will definitely work. Practice, don't just think about it! Without overcoming these shortcomings, nothing will be possible. You can’t even be a good project manager—even though you may have good skills!
[8] While working, you must prepare for the future! Establish your own work environment! Prepare a work environment for yourself as early as possible, equipped with a computer, an oscilloscope (you can buy a second-hand one), an emulator, a programmer, etc. You can do some work in your spare time. On the one hand, you can get in touch with the market and develop a sense of the market, while also accumulating funds. More importantly, prepare your own products. We technical people don’t have money, but only technology. Technology is not represented by academic qualifications and certificates, but by products. If you come up with decent products, you can transfer technology or cooperate with others to start a business! Prepare everything first and wait for opportunities. Otherwise, you will miss the opportunity even if it comes!
[9] Learn to be good at selling yourself! Not only should you be capable, but you should also be able to speak and write. It is necessary to be good at using every opportunity to sell yourself and establish your own brand image! You must create conditions for others to understand you. Otherwise, how can your boss know that you are capable? How can outside investors believe in you? Sell yourself early, and opportunities will naturally come to you! It’s a good idea to create a personal homepage! ! In particular, you should cultivate your reputation in the industry. With a reputation, you will naturally have high-paying opportunities, and more importantly, opportunities for cooperation...
[10] When it is time to act, act! You can never be 100% sure! ! ! When the conditions are right, you should be bold to do it and create your own career. Don't hesitate or be confused. You may not succeed, but at least you will accumulate experience for the next attempt. If you don't do it, you will never succeed. Moreover, you must experience failure to succeed. No one can succeed easily without going through the storm!
Last year, I wrote an article entitled "Ten Tips for Young Engineers", which was published on Lao Gu Forum and NetEase. It was originally a casual article, but it caused a sensation and attracted a lot of discussion. So far, it has been reposted on more than 2,600 websites and has been viewed by more than one million people. Among them, the reprinter actually wrote "The innermost thoughts of an old American engineer - Ten pieces of advice for young engineers", which makes people feel very interesting. I have never been to the United States of America, and I admire their advanced technology very much. I just sneer at those who went abroad to wash dishes for a few years, served foreigners, and came back to act like a big shot in front of the villagers! I have also carefully read the opinions and views of many readers. Most of them agree, and some people disagree. Here I will respond to some of your opinions and express my gratitude to everyone (bow!).
The author is a technical person and has no technical achievements. It is also in line with what some readers said that if you have not achieved anything in your thirties, you should consider it. In my more than ten years of engineering career, I have drunk and worked with no less than a thousand engineers, and I have met many masters. I have a deep understanding of their thoughts and ideas. In addition, I have a long and rough experience of wandering and working, and I have a lot of feelings. Fang wrote this article, hoping to help my juniors.
I have made it very clear in the previous article that most people do not expect to become professors or academicians! In fact, it is impossible! Most engineers work in enterprises, which are purely commercial operations. Who is willing to spend a lot of money to equip you with advanced testing equipment, send you to various academic conferences, prepare a full range of domestic and foreign professional journals for you, and have the patience to wait for you to produce results in one or two years? The author was once forced to use only a pointer multimeter as an encoder for a paging station, and was exhausted to the point of vomiting blood. Do you think you can guarantee the technical indicators? If you look at the working environment of engineers in large foreign companies, you will know whether you have hope or not! Of course you work hard, but don’t others work hard?
Of course, the conditions in scientific research institutes, especially military units, are much better, and the country is willing to spend money. I used to work in a large military research institute when I graduated. At that time, there was a 500MHZ four-channel digital oscilloscope with a micro printer, but after I graduated, I never met Taiwanese and Hong Kong people again, not to mention the private local bosses who came out of the cornfield. Unfortunately, the current management system is too poor, which seriously restricts technological progress, nepotism, nepotism, overstaffing, and rules and regulations... People with some new ideas are either hit or left out, and those with some ability have run away. I believe many people have experienced this. I have also met many engineers from these places. One of my senior brothers worked in a military research institute in the mainland. He worked hard for more than ten years and participated in the development of many large projects at the ministerial level. He was quite famous for his single-chip microcomputer development. Recently, he wrote to me that he wanted to go to Shenzhen to work. The unit had a house reform, and his savings for many years were turned upside down. His daughter's tuition was not settled. He was heartbroken and left!
Of course, if you enjoy technology and don't care about other things, that's another matter! In short, for most people, the correct mentality is to regard technology as a job to support the family. I often tell my engineers here: Don’t think that we are nobler than Uncle Zhang who nails shoes at the door. In essence, we are the same. We all make a living by our craft! In fact, his overall quality is not lower than ours, and we should learn from him in many aspects (the character defects of engineers have been described in the previous article).
Moreover, everyone is not a monk in a temple. Girlfriends, family, children, filial piety to parents... These are all things you need to consider. Otherwise, if you are lucky enough to become an expert, is it worth it to be deserted by everyone? I have several engineers here (one of them was a university lecturer and a software expert) whose girlfriends and wives ran away with others and were heartbroken. Why? It was all caused by money.
Some people say that there must be engineers in society, otherwise... That’s right! Most engineers are still engineers in the end. Even if they don’t want to, there is no way. They can’t go against their own stomachs! Doing this is finally a little decent, and it can finally fill your stomach. Not everyone can get rich! Put away your ideals, count yourself among the girls selling lychees at the door, live honestly, and live a good life, which is also a way of life. Don't always have ideas and self-esteem. The boss can treat you to dinner and karaoke in a sanctimonious manner and flatter you a few words, but don't be proud of it. Deep down, he regards you and them as the same kind of people and despises them very much! The author has worked as a R&D manager and a chief engineer, not to mention our junior brothers and sisters who are still busy soldering circuit boards.
Since most people still have to engage in technology, what's the point of saying so much? In fact, everyone understands the truth, but the author has two intentions: First, the junior brothers and sisters have just entered the industry and are very malleable. Maybe they can be inspired and take fewer detours, which will make them very happy. Second, some of the author's feelings, I can't help but express them. The old engineer is more poisoned and needs heavy medicine. I am considering giving myself a dose!
The suggestions are very pertinent. Indeed, in actual work, many qualities and knowledge are required, but knowledge alone is not enough.
