irf3205 ir2110 switch circuit [Copy link]

I want to use PWM to control IRF3205. It is said that a driver circuit must be added. So how high should the voltage and current be after PWM passes through the driver circuit to turn on IRF3205? But the MOS tube can work without the driver. What is the purpose of adding the driver? (Ir2110 driver is used)

The driving current of the IO port of the microcontroller is limited. A dedicated driver chip can provide a larger driving current or a higher driving voltage. In addition, the driver chip can sometimes decompose a PWM signal into two complementary signals, or two signals in the same direction but with a little time difference, to drive different MOS at the same time, such as full-bridge drive.  Details Published on 2018-7-19 08:58

"What voltage and current must be reached to turn on the IRF3205?" The turn-on voltage of the tube can be found in the manual of the tube. As for the current, since the MOS tube input is roughly a capacitor, it is related to the PWM frequency (more precisely, it is related to the width of the rising and falling edges of the MOS tube current you require).

Then I can use a single chip microcomputer to directly drive the wave MOS tube, so why do I need to add a driver?  Details Published on 2018-7-18 15:58

"The MOS tube can work without the driver, so what is the purpose of adding the driver?" It is often feasible to use a microcontroller to directly drive the MOS tube, especially a 5V powered microcontroller, when the frequency is low and the requirements for the rising and falling edges are not high. Adding a driver may be to increase the drive current (to make the rising and falling edges steeper), to increase the drive voltage, or for isolation (IR2110 is an isolation optocoupler).

IRF3205 is a field effect transistor, which is a voltage controlled device. According to the DATASHEET, the gate turn-on voltage Vgs is 2V~4V, and the recommended Vgs voltage is 10V~20V. If your microcontroller is powered by 3.3V or 5V, the PWM high level voltage of 3.3V/5V can barely drive it. Adding a drive circuit to turn the PWM high level voltage to more than 10V is to obtain more stable performance.
