ON Semiconductor and Nantero Jointly Develop Carbon Nanotube Technology [Copy link]

The two companies have joined forces to develop semiconductor process technology to integrate carbon nanotubes into CMOS wafer manufacturing at ON Semiconductor's facility in Gresham, Oregon, USA.
2006-05-30

ON Semiconductor ( NASDAQ: ONNN ) and Nantero Corporation announced that they have joined forces to develop innovative semiconductor process technologies to continue to effectively integrate carbon nanotubes in CMOS wafer manufacturing.

The joint development project is taking place at ON Semiconductor 's manufacturing facility in Gresham , Oregon , USA . The facility was recently purchased from LSI Logic Corporation and has manufacturing capabilities down to the 130 nanometer (nm) node, making it ideal for technology development projects with Nantero . When ON Semiconductor took over the facility earlier this month, it hired substantially all of the facility's employees, including most of the in-house engineering team.

“We see great potential in this joint project,” said Greg Schmergel, Nantero co-founder and CEO . “ The Nantero and Gresham engineering teams have collaborated successfully for many years, and we look forward to working with ON Semiconductor to create the world’s first semiconductor devices using carbon nanotubes .

Nantero 's patented CMOS- compatible carbon nanotube process is currently being developed at ON Semiconductor 's Gresham semiconductor manufacturing facility, the world's first carbon nanotube-certified wafer fab.

" ON Semiconductor is excited to be working with Nantero , " said Bill George , senior vice president of operations at ON Semiconductor . " Nantero 's technology achievements at Gresham are impressive, and we expect our collaboration to lead to further milestones in integrating nanotubes into CMOS processes. "

About Nantero

Nantero is a nanotechnology company developing next-generation semiconductor devices using carbon nanotubes. Nantero is developing NRAM - high-density non-volatile random access memory devices with a wide range of potential applications, including the ability to instantly boot computers and replace memory in applications such as cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras and PDAs , as well as in the networking field. NRAM - can be manufactured for both standalone and embedded memory applications. Nantero is also working with other licensees to develop additional applications based on Nantero's core nanotube technology.
