The Pursuit of a Dreamer: Li Ka-shing's Speech at a Middle School in Hong Kong (Full Text)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello Taiwan Network http://www.nihaotw.com September 9, 2005
Chinanews.com, September 9 (Xinhua) According to Hong Kong media reports, Li Ka-shing, chairman of Cheung Kong Group, donated 80 million yuan to St. Paul's Co-educational College, a famous school in Hong Kong. He personally visited the school yesterday and delivered a speech entitled "The Pursuit of Dreamers" to all teachers and students.
The full text of the speech is as follows:
Good morning!
I believe that apart from my granddaughter, you are my youngest audience. I am much older than you. I hope I will not make you feel bored today.
I want to talk to you about "dreams". It is now 8:30 in the morning. I hope Principal Chen will not mind me talking about "dreaming" so early in the morning. Please don't worry. I don't like those who only know how to "daydream", sit back and wait for fate to favor them. I have always believed that although various opportunities in the world continue to emerge around us, they will only sprout in the hearts of those who are ready to welcome them.
Don't repeat the old thinking
. People all over the world recognize that the Chinese are capable, smart and hardworking, so why is there still a distance between our national strength and some Western countries? Some people simply attribute this to institutional or historical issues. I don't have a complete answer, but I think facing up to the value-added role of "dreams" and strengthening young people's hopes for the future is a catalyst for national power. I understand that traditional Chinese cultural education has always emphasized pragmatism and despised the pursuit of "dreamers". We often praise those who are diligent and hardworking, but we disdain to inspire, guide and support those "dreamers" who think out of the box. Although this idea is not wrong, it is obviously not comprehensive. In this ever-changing world, the pursuit of knowledge is only one part of satisfying life goals. Today, we must know how to inspire children to create dreams. This is not only to win the achievement of quantifiable value in life, but more importantly, the enlightenment of spiritual power, so that children can become true advocates of modern wisdom, not slaves of old-fashioned thinking, only knowing how to blindly accept, repeat or confirm traditional education, and seal traditions, but can know how to face all tests and challenges with a positive and open attitude, so that our past can cooperate with the future.
Crossing boundaries to explore life
Young friends, the future world will be more demanding. Lifelong pursuit of a solid knowledge foundation, working harder than others, and giving more are the basic principles. To be extraordinary, you must cultivate and persist in an independent spirit of exploration and discovery. Are you curious about the wonderful power of nature? Will you explore life with great enthusiasm and sincerity? Do you just accept the limitations of your ability silently or are you determined to pursue a dream that goes beyond the limits of your ability? What kind of person do you want to be? What kind of achievements do you want to have? Can your wisdom transcend the humanities and sciences and see through the connection between things? Or are you just like Franklin said, "a person with great knowledge who can describe a horse in nine languages, but ignorantly buys a cow as a mount" and has no ability to think carefully and discern clearly. Do you have the ability to reason? Do you think twice before drawing a conclusion? Perhaps ask everyone a question: When playing computer games, are you a person who only knows to participate in the game according to the established rules of others? Or do you think about and try to improve the gameplay and design while playing?
Pursuing a Richer Soul
Dear friends, all the progress, power of science, beauty of art, and enlightenment of philosophy that we enjoy now may have started with one person's question or one person's dream of seeking a better answer. The St. Paul's School Board hopes for reform. They seek support from the society and have received a warm response. Of course, I personally hope that the government can pay more attention to strategic education investment and make greater contributions to the community. For the future, we urgently need this. I believe that what you are pursuing is not only to build a brand new school building, but to strive to create a richer soul for young people. Perhaps one day we will say that mankind has solved another difficult problem and made another step forward, and it all started in the hearts of our classmates, his questions and his dreams. I would like
