Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP) today announced two new 20-pin PIC? microcontrollers, further strengthening its 8-bit microcontroller family.
The PIC16F631 provides a cost-effective solution for migrating from 8- and 14-pin devices to 20-pin devices, while the PIC16F677 provides affordable hardware I2C? and SPI capabilities to users in the small Flash microcontroller market. Both devices are fully compatible with Microchip's latest mid-range architecture PIC microcontrollers, making them ideal for upward migration, thus enriching the functionality and reducing the cost of existing 20-pin designs. The
new microcontrollers are an extension and extension of the PIC16F685/687/689/690 family, and can directly replace corresponding devices with more functions. Their board designs, control code and tool kits can be reused without any modification, allowing engineers to free themselves from the constraints of additional costs and conduct platform-based system design more freely.
Both devices feature nanoWatt Technology, which ensures minimal power consumption in battery-driven applications; two analog comparators with S/R latch mode, eliminating the need for discrete components; and In-Circuit Serial Programming for field programmability. These feature improvements help simplify increasingly complex embedded control systems.
The new PIC16F631/677 microcontrollers are suitable for a wide range of markets, including battery-driven equipment (security systems, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, handheld devices, etc.), home appliances (electric frying pans, washing machines and dryers, etc.) and power conversion (power supplies, DC/DC converters and battery chargers, etc.).
Key features of the new PIC16F631/677 microcontrollers include: Common features for both devices Up to 3.5 KB of Flash program memory Up to 128 bytes of RAM memory Wide range of internal clock frequencies (31 kHz to 8 MHz) Two comparators with S/R latch mode 0.6V internal bandgap reference Ultra-low power wake-up capability Enhanced low-current watchdog timer Enhanced gated low-power timer1 In-circuit serial programming technology Brown-out reset with software control option Up to 18 input/output pins Space-saving 4x4 QFN package
Unique features for the PIC16F677 10-bit digital-to-analog converter (ADC) with 12 channels SPI and I2C support with address masking options
Both new devices are supported by Microchip’s full suite of high-performance development tools, including the PICkit? 2 Starter Kit, the free MPLAB? IDE (Integrated New Development Environment) and the low-cost MPLAB ICD 2 (in-circuit debugger).
The PIC16F631 and PIC16F677 microcontrollers will be available for sampling and mass production in mid-July. Both products are lead-free and RoHS-compliant devices and are available in 20-pin PDIP, SOIC, SSOP and QFN packages.
