Use a 12-volt relay with a normally closed contact. Connect one end of the relay coil to 12-volt positive electricity and the other end to the normally closed contact. The other end of the normally closed contact is grounded, and a diode is connected at the junction of the coil and the normally closed contact.

If a ground signal diode is required, connect it in reverse. If a positive signal diode is required, connect it forward.
