AMD pioneered power management for network PCs with Magic Packet? technology and, building on that success, AMD co-wrote the OnNow power management reference specification for network devices, further establishing its leadership in this industry-first technology.

OnNow technology provides a comprehensive, system-wide solution for system and device power management. OnNow is a term specific to PCs, meaning that the PC is always in standby mode, but always ready to respond immediately to user or other requests.

OnNow technology requires changes to hardware, device drivers, operating systems, and applications, and also relies on the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) and PCI bus power management specifications. Initially, OnNow technology was supported by Microsoft's Windows 98 and Windows NT operating systems. AMD supports OnNow, ACPI and PCI bus power management with the new PCnet-FAST+ and PCnet FAST III 10/100 Ethernet controllers. These controllers fully comply with the OnNow Network Device Level Power Management specification (PDF 46K), which was co-authored by AMD and includes AMD's patented Magic Packet technology for waking up and powering up remote PCs. This document also defines the various device power management states, as well as other system and network events that can wake up a PC. These highly integrated, low voltage (3.3 volt) devices are ideal for PC98, PC99, and can be connected to systems that require advanced power management capabilities, and can be deployed either on the motherboard or on the network interface card (NIC).
