Recently, many major domestic commercial vehicle-grade MCU products have been released. [Copy link]

I remember that many domestic MCUs were used in cars, but few of them passed the automotive certification.

Mainly because the automotive certification cycle is relatively long, there has been a surge in the number of MCUs that have passed automotive-grade certification.

Years ago, I first noticed Fudan Micro: FM33LG025A passed AEC-Q100 certification

A few days ago, I saw that Xianji: "Using strength to empower the new energy market, Xianji HPM6200 is newly launched", and the product is also automotive-grade and AEC-Q100 certified.

Today I saw National Technology again: " Mass production released! National Technology's first automotive-grade MCU N32A455 is on the market "

Are automotive-certified MCUs also going to become as cheap as cabbages?

There should be more that I didn't notice. If you have noticed, please add to it, haha.

The market is small, and most international manufacturers are using it. The product upgrade speed is slow, and most companies are unlikely to change it, which forms a big barrier  Details Published on 2023-2-25 07:22

The design of automotive-grade chips, especially the manufacturing process, will significantly increase the cost of chips. If the market is small, the threshold is naturally high, and small semiconductor manufacturers cannot compete with those international giants. It will be different if the market is large, especially with the background of "decoupling". The "mushrooms after the rain" of domestic new energy vehicles, coupled with the blessing of "decoupling", provide rare business opportunities for small domestic suppliers, and of course they will rush in.

Moreover, automotive standards do not require any sophisticated advanced processes, and production lines with backward process technology can also produce them. MCU does not require any advanced processes, and it can be made and sold, with a profit margin that is much higher than commercial grade. Manufacturers with the conditions will naturally not let it go, and manufacturers without the conditions will create the conditions and enter the market, until the profit margin drops to a certain level to form an entry barrier.

I have worked on automotive-grade chips before - nand memory chips. In fact, automotive-grade chips are not the same as automotive-grade chips. I have worked on reliability, system certification, and traceability. That's about it.

So is your vehicle certification cycle quite long?

I looked at Fudan Micro's automotive-grade chip. In December 2021, it was still mentioned on the official account as an automotive MCU series. At that time, it had not yet passed the automotive-grade certification.

It should be the largest one besides mobile phones and PCs.

Really? Then do you know how many MCUs are used in a new energy vehicle? And how many are used in a traditional motor vehicle? The market size is the decisive factor.  Details Published on 2023-2-21 20:40

It's simple, because it will be monopolized by large suppliers.

Let me give you a simple and vivid example: In the 1990s, the mobile phone market in China was very small. In 1996, I planned to buy a mobile phone for work. At that time, there were only three brands on the market: Motorola, Ericsson, and Nokia. A few large companies easily monopolized the market, and it was very difficult for other companies to enter the mobile phone industry. In 2000, the Chinese mobile phone market began to explode. Dozens of brands soon appeared on the market, and the number of domestic mobile phone brands soon far exceeded that of foreign brands. After the smartphone market exploded in the 2010s, I am afraid no one knows how many brands there are in the mobile phone market. Go to Shenzhen Huaqiangbei and you will see that a counter dares to promote its own brands. If you have a little bit of sales, even if it is only a hundred units, you can even customize your own brand. As long as you are willing, you can easily produce a nmg mobile phone at any time with only the money of an ordinary family car. Why is this so? The market is too large, no manufacturer can monopolize it, and the entry threshold is so low that small workshops can try their hand.

There has always been a question: how do these MCUs conduct reliability tests and be put into the market in a short period of time?

In fact, the automotive regulations are not the same as automotive regulations. Reliability (specialized reliability testing), system certification, and traceability are almost the same.
