[GD32L233C-START Review] 1. Unboxing + Environment Setup [Copy link]

1. Unboxing

First of all, I would like to thank EEWORLD and GD for hosting such a trial event, and I am lucky to be on the shortlist.

The last time I participated in a development board trial event at EEWORLD was in June 2019. The development board happened to be GD's development board, and the chip was GD32E231.

So, I rummaged through the boxes and found the development board I had tried before to see if it was the same as the L233 development board I was using this time.

As shown below:

E231 Development Board:

L233 Development Board:

After a rough comparison, the layout of the development board is similar. The main differences are:

1. The silk screen of E231 development board is thicker

2. The L233 development board has three USB interfaces (GD-link debugging port, MCU USB interface, USB to serial port), while the E231 development board has only one GD-link debugging interface

3. The L233 external 32768 low-speed crystal oscillator was replaced with a SMD one

4. The L233 development board has an SWD port, which should be convenient for using an external debugger

By the way, mini USB interfaces are indeed rare, so you need to prepare a corresponding mini USB cable separately.

2. Environment Construction

1. Data preparation

The information related to the development board can be found and downloaded in the [Board Information Download] column on the event page

2. Add L233 chip support package to KEIL/IAR

There is a download link for the L233 support package on the data download page. Unzip it after downloading. If you are using Keil for development, just double-click the .pack file to automatically install it.

( Note: Keil version needs to be 5.26 and above )

3. Open the Template example project in the standard firmware library and compile

4. Connect GD-link to the computer and you can download the program

The L233 development board has more USB interfaces, which is much more user-friendly than the E231 development board.

MCUs are all ArmCortex-M23 cores

The L233 MCU has a maximum clock speed of 64MHz and integrates 64KB to 256KB of embedded eFlash and 16KB to 32KB of SRAM.
