The main factor of MCU price increase still depends on supply and demand

First of all, in terms of demand, the epidemic has led to an increase in demand for online education and office work, which has led to an increase in demand for corresponding driver ICs, power management ICs and power components. After the first quarter, the epidemic was effectively contained, and the demand for consumer electronics, automobiles and home appliances rebounded. The demand for power MOS, PMIC, sensor ICs and other products continued to maintain full capacity.
The above reasons, coupled with the chip manufacturers' increased safety inventory, have jointly pushed the wafer capacity to be fully loaded, especially 8-inch wafers.
On the other hand, most wafer fabs in the world have rarely expanded the production capacity of mature processes. The growth rate of production capacity in the past five years has been less than 5%, but demand is constantly growing, especially after the large-scale application of 5G and AI, the global demand for wafer production capacity will increase significantly.
Demand has increased, but the epidemic at the beginning of the year caused semiconductor manufacturers to misjudge the demand in the second half of the year and the estimate was too conservative. Therefore, after entering the second half of the year, the peak season of the electronics industry has arrived, and demand has grown rapidly, causing wafer fabs to raise prices first, and then pass it on to the entire market step by step.
In order to ease the capacity crisis, MediaTek, which has always been engaged in IC design, has begun to buy equipment and rent it to TSMC. However, expanding production and building new wafer fabs are still far from quenching thirst. After all, it takes at least two to three years to build a wafer fab.
Overall, the price increase of MCU is mainly caused by the imbalance of market supply and demand. In order to maintain their own interests, companies will adjust prices. However, in this process, it is inevitable that some companies will fish in troubled waters, create panic, and take the opportunity to raise prices.
